We Meet Marina

We Meet Marina
14 August 2017
In South Africa, the month of August is commemorated as Women’s Month, in tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 09 August 1956, in protest against the extension of the Urban Pass Laws.

During this important month, we’d like to spotlight an important member of the Lifedoc™ team: Marina van der Merwe, Regional Manager at MediSwitch.

Who is Marina?

Marina van der Merwe is a Regional Manager at MediSwitch, the company behind LifeDoc™. A visionary by nature, Marina saw the need for a healthcare record that would be accessible from anywhere, anytime; enabling people to proactively manage their health. LifeDoc™ as we know it today, was born out of this vision. She is a proud mother and grandmother too. Marina is fascinated by the opportunities to be discovered within and through technology, especially the ways it can help and support in protecting the planet and creating more responsible citizens. We caught up with Marina to find out more about her perspective on Women’s Day, the role of women in our lives and LifeDoc™.

What does Women's Day mean to you, specifically in relation to your life?

Apart from a lovely holiday to spend with my loved ones, I am passionate about the impact of women on our country. The march by the +-20,000 women on 9 August 1956 bears testimony to the impact of women uniting to fight for a just cause. This was a peaceful march, to protest against the issuing of passes and women joined in from -all corners of South Africa. This was all coordinated and driven by passion and the struggle for equality – bearing in mind there were no cellphones or social media platforms in 1956.

If you had to name the most influential women in your life, who would they be, and why?

My mother. She lived the motto that nothing is impossible, that there is always another solution and that you must find a balance in what you do. She was responsible for our family, acting mostly as a single parent, as my father’s job meant that he was away from home for long periods of time.

While still in high school, I was inspired by a friend’s mother too, who taught me so much about how women can make a difference in the professional world. She was my role model and mentor for the first period of my career. I learned from her that we need to embrace our special skill-sets as women, and to bring that into the work place. At that time, the workplace was a very male-dominated environment and keeping the end-goal in mind, assisted to slowly change this culture. I believe that, today, we reap the benefits of the many women that actively implemented their unique value sets and paved the way to bring about positive changes in the workplace. I think we still have much to learn and implement, but we have come a long way over the last few decades.
