Our top 5 tips for choosing healthy snacks. No boring food allowed!

To the snack stations!

Getting your family meal plan right takes time and effort, but good nutrition always pays off in the long run. But there’s one area of life that can get a little difficult to plan for: the snack stations. That’s why we’ve put together our top 5 favourite tips for integrating healthy snacks into your everyday eating:

Fabulous fruit

Sure, most fruits contain natural sugars and all sorts, but they’re a generally healthy choice when it comes to picking things out of the snack stations. Fruit salad, fruit kebabs, or a fruit platter, make a colourful addition to any playdate, party, or get-together. There’s nothing wrong with snacking on fruit (and yes, the extra fibre helps too!)

Pop those seeds

Movie night or not, popcorn makes for a great healthy snack (just skip the flavourings loaded with MSG). Instead, sprinkle nutritional yeast on your popcorn for an excellent, healthier choice, or keep the salt to a minimum. Air-popped popcorn is a must, and it just tastes better too!

Homemade is the best made

No matter what you make or prepare for your meals, remember that a big part of your journey to health starts in your own kitchen. For the most part, the healthiest meals are made in your kitchen and, from a budget and health perspective, they’re most often the best. Don’t be shy to experiment with healthy snack creations and try out a few different recipes for your children’s lunchboxes. This way, you have complete control over the sugar content, ingredients, and every step of the preparation process. There’s nothing better than homemade!

The rainbow is ridiculously good

We’re not talking about taking a long journey to find a pot of gold at the end of it, but eating the rainbow is an inherently good thing to do for your health. When you eat the rainbow every day, you’re ensuring that your meals are varied, colourful, crunchy, and anything but boring!

We’re nuts for nuts
Integrating nuts into your daily meal plans is important, because most varieties of nuts help to lower your cholesterol level. Moreover, nuts are a great source of good fats, that support your heart health and overall wellbeing. Plus, nuts are a crunchy, flavourful snack, filled with protein and fibre.
