Healthy Habits for a Better Year

Healthy Habits for a Better Year
09 January 2017
Welcome to a whole new year! With twelve months of glorious new opportunities to come, we trust that this will be your best year yet.

As we look towards 2017, we’ve put together our top four tips for turning this year into your healthiest and happiest year. Here they are:

Drink More Water
Did you know? Most of us just don’t drink enough water every day? Incidentally, popular culture tells us that we’re supposed to drink 8 glasses of water every day, but that hard-and-fast rule seems to be fading in relevance over time. If you’re involved in strenuous sporting activities or manual labour, you should be drinking more water than the average person. What’s the easiest way to make sure you drink enough water every day? It’s this simple: keep a convenient, refillable water bottle with you throughout the day, and sip from it whenever you need. If you find yourself feeling thirsty during the day, know that it’s your body telling you that you need to drink more water. Up your intake and gauge how you feel every day – let that be your guide to how much water you need to drink every day.

Turn Screen Time into Dream Time
We get it – after a long day at the office, and then a quick rush through the mall to fetch groceries before you head home, and then another round of making dinner, tending to the kids and making sure the dishes are washed – we also want to lie on the couch and catch up on our favourite series. What’s worse is that, many of us, finally switch off the television and head to bed, only to open our phones to chat on whatsapp and scroll through our friends’ Facebook posts until the Sandman arrives to send us off snoozing. It’s time to turn that screen time into dream time, and you’ll get better sleep for it too. Don’t feel bad – so many of us do it! – but it’s a habit you can ditch without any negative consequences. In fact, it’s incredibly good for you! Set your phone a bedtime too – here’s a useful guide to help you.

Do What You Enjoy
You spent your hours after work in the gym, or you popped in before heading to work in 2016, but it feels more like a slog than a pleasure. It’s time to reassess what you do for your health, so don’t be afraid to dump the things you don’t enjoy and swap them for the things you do. Did you hate spinning class but felt you had to do it? Dump it and go join a yoga class, to see if that works better for you. If you battled through those weight workouts and didn’t feel like you saw any benefits, skip it next time and go for a swim instead. If the whole idea of gym gets you down, cancel your membership and start looking for something you’d like to do. Check your community notice boards, Facebook groups or other community communication portals for information on fun classes you can join, or groups you can sign up for. Have you ever tried Karate or wondered about joining those crazy people who go for a run every morning at 5am? Now’s the time to try it out. You’ll make some new friends along the way too.

You Are a Work in Progress
Remember that your life, health and body are, always, a work in progress. If you feel like you let yourself down in relation to your health goals in 2016, this new year is an opportunity to move beyond it. Don’t let one bad round of feeling demotivated keep you down – 2017 could be the year you reach for, and achieve, all those goals.
