Knowing what to do in the event of a medical emergency is the most effective way towards turning it into a non-emergency. We’ve put together a list of important ways you can respond to an emergency situation.

Making a family emergency plan
Although it’s not always comfortable to talk about, being prepared for a medical emergency at home is important, because accidents can happen, so easily and so quickly. Ensuring that your children know what to do is just as important too, and there are a number of ways you can make it even easier for them to obtain or call for help. These include:

  • An easy to read list of emergency telephone numbers posted in your kitchen or near to the telephone;
  • Your home alarm system is not only good for security, but it can also be useful for summoning emergency assistance. Check to see if you can add panic buttons to your home alarm system or;
  • Install a mobile application that links up to emergency services. Your security company may already offer one, or you can find one online. Take a look at ICEPlus or similar services and,
  • Talking through your family emergency plans with your children and don’t forget to include instructions for dealing with a house fire or similar situations.

Family First Aid kit
A First Aid kit is often forgotten for your home, but it’s an essential for everyone. If you’d prefer not to build your own, you can pick up a fully stocked First Aid kit from your local pharmacy or retailer. Make sure it’s stored in an easily accessible spot in your home, but also ensure that all medications are securely locked away, out of the reach of children.
Using your cellphone in an emergency
Of course, most of us have at least one cellphone in our homes nowadays, which makes it even easier to call for help. Here are the important emergency numbers you should know:

  • MTN/Vodacom/Cell C: Dial 112
  • Netcare: 082 911
  • Ambulance: 10177
