Artificial Intelligence and Health

Artificial Intelligence and Health
16 December 2019
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve your health is not a futuristic notion. In South Africa itself, AI is already making waves.

Why AI?

Implementing AI technologies into healthcare settings may appear, on the surface, like we’re handing our health over to the robots. And, if you’ve watched any Sci-fi thriller movie of recent times, you might think that’s a bad idea. The converse, however, is true: by implementing AI technologies into our healthcare systems, we’re making them faster, better, and less likely to fall apart under the stresses of being, well, human. AI technologies propel us towards an error-free experience and, surely, if your surgeon’s hand is shaky from exhaustion, wouldn’t a steady-handed robot give you some level of comfort instead?

Smart Healthcare

Reducing the risk of fraudulent transactions, and improving access to diagnostic information on the fly, AI technologies are already embedded into South Africa’s healthcare system. Moreover, how these technologies are improving access to care will only grow. Combining AI with e-health initiatives, for example, pays dividends, in terms of both affordability and access to care for patients.

Error Reduction Rates

As IBM Research in South Africa outlines, the error rate for AI healthcare solutions is now a mere 2 to 3%, a significant percentage lower than the average error rate in medical settings across the country. By simply reducing the potential for error in a healthcare setting, we’re firmly working towards improving patient care, enhancing diagnostics, cutting back on wastage, and speeding up patient turnaround times.

Have a Chat

AI technologies aren’t only suited for the hands-on requirements that come with healthcare. They’re also providing excellent online resources too. Using AI to run chatbots, interact with potential patients, or communicate with a target audience frees up some human capital, to focus on more specialised patient needs. Woebot, for example, offers online, instant support and services for people in need of mental health assistance.
